MARPOL , Some Important Definition

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION FOR THE PREVENTION OF MARINE POLLUTION FROM SHIP





Introduction:

               Marine Pollution is the introduction by man, directly or indirectly, of substances that are harm full to the marine environment. Marine pollution results in harm to living resources such as fish and marine life, hazard to human health, hindrance to marine activities like fishing, shipping and oil drilling and reduction of the amenities such as beaches , boating and waterspouts.

👉 MARPOL is the International Convention for the Prevention of Marine Pollution from Ship 1973/1978


👉1973/1978 Means :MARPOL Convention is adopted in 1973 and as modified by the protocol of 1978   and came in force 02nd October 1983.


👉 Protocol : 

                 Protocol means they are the important "Treaty" instrument made when major amendments are required to be made to a convention which already adopted has not yet entered into force. 


👉 Treaty :

              It is an International "Agreement" between two or more states, which is Bonding in International law.


👉 Convention : 

                  Convention is made, When recognised "Flag States" member of IMO or Contracting by Government that there is need of Provision or Standards regarding Safety, Survey and Certification etc.



👉 Code : 

                Code falls under Convention as the specific regulation are laid down in Codes, with regards to the concern of Convention i.e. under SOLAS/MARPOL Convention, LSA/FFA/ISPS.
