Passage planning is a procedure to develop a complete description of a vessel's voyage from start to finish. The plan includes leaving the dock or harbour area, the en-route portion of a voyage, approaching the destination, and mooring, the industry term for this is 'berth to berth'.
The MCA break Passage Planning in to Four Parts:
A. Appraisal
B. Planing
C. Execution
D. Monitoring
A. Appraisal : For the passage planning below charts to be used for gathering information by the officers.
- Navigation Charts
- Routing Charts
- Small Scale Charts
- Large Scale Charts
- Planning Charts
For Gathering various navigation information the following publication to be used:-
- Admiralty Chart Catalogue
- Admiralty Tidal Stream
- Admiralty Tide Table
- Admiralty Distance Table
- Admiralty List of Radio Signal
- Admiralty List of Light & Fog Signal
- Admiralty Sailing Direction
- Ship's Routing
- Nautical Almanac
- Guide to Port Entry
- Notice to Mariner
- Navigational Warning
- Mariner's Handbook
- Load Line Chart
- Draft of Ship
- Personal Experience
- Gather information on Weather and Currents during this voyage
Check the past log book, if vessel has done same voyage previously . Identify the Hazard and Weather was Observed.
B. Planing : It is good practice to mark dangerous such as near by wreck, shallow patches, reef, small island, emergency anchorage position etc.
Reporting area should also clearly marked on the chart.
- No Go Area
- Margin of Safety
- charted Track
- Course alteration and wheel Over Point
- Parallel Index
- Tides and Current
- Minimum UKC
- Use of Echo Sounder
- Head Mark
- Call the Master
- Notice to Engine Room
- Reduction of Speed
Calculation of Squat and UKC
Example :
Cb = 0.7
Speed = 26 kts
Assume Draft = 10 mtr
Squat = Cb x (V) ² / 50 = 0.7 x (26) ² / 50
Squat = 9.46 mtr
UKC 10% 0f draft = 0.1 mtr
Squat = 9.46 mtr
UKC = 0.1 mtr
Draft = 10.0 mtr
Required Draft = 19.56 mtr
C. Execution : Now officer will execute this Plan and discuss with the Master, chief officer. If any changes required do the same. And also discuss weather report before and after of departure.
D. Monitoring : Now Monitor the Continuous progress of the vessel . the vessel can be checked by the position fixing by all available means of navigational equipment. Monitor the echo sounder for depth & make sure parallel Indexing . In any doubt call the master.
